Coming Home

Yesterday we brought Trip home.Yeah - we were so ready to leave the hospital. The staff was great but we were ready to get home!

We got her dressed in the standard going home outfit all the kids have worn. She cried while we were changing her but then quieted down and fell asleep before we were even home.

Off we were!

The whole family is home!

In the Hospital

Trip arrived into the world loud and proud on June 2nd!

Here she is getting her measurements:

After the craziness of delivery, we settled into the recovery room for an always-interrupted night of sleep. We wanted to leave on Sunday, but since Trip was born so late in the day on Saturday and they wanted to monitor her for 24 hours, we settled in.

On Sunday G-Ma and G-Pa T brought Tigger and Tilly by the hospital for a much needed visit. They were a little intimidated by the new environment, but were curious to see their new sister.

Trip's here!

Born yesterday at 9:35p - 6lbs, 12oz, 20in. No name yet.

The trip to the hospital was, well, a trip. We left the house around 6:15, with contractions around 10 mins apart. The doc had told us to "make our way in, take a shower, grab dinner.". Our plan was to grab a bite at a nice restaurant across the street from the hospital.

We decided to Metro, because "we could." There is a stop right next to the hospital and another about 7 blocks away. The farther one is quicker to get to (a different line, about 8 fewer stops). We went to the farther one, thinking the walk would do us (her) good.

By the time we got off the train, contractions jumped to about 5 mins apart. So, no nice dinner - take out burgers it is! We got our food and headed up, around 7p.

While registering, the L&D nurses informed us that we couldn't bring food back! So, we had to scarf our food in the waiting room. Good times.

Once all registered, Mama TT had to be examined to confirm she was in labor. She was at 5cm around 7:45 (she was 3cm the day prior). It was confirmed - labor was on!

We hung out in the exam room until around 8:20. They then moved us to an L&D room. Around that time the contractions kicked up to 3 mins apart. Mama TT had decided to go without pain meds - au natural. Good thing because I don't think there would have been enough time.

Since we were here with Tilly, a midwife practice has joined. So, the nurses are well versed in the strategies of a natural birth. They helped Mama TT "try" to get comfortable - exercise ball, rocking, etc. Around her 3rd position, she was on her hands and knees on the bed.

"I think we need a check," said one of the nurses. About 10 seconds later there were around 10 people in the room - at least 3 docs. There was brief discussion about getting Mama TT on her back. Too late.

The pushing began with her still on her hands and knees. Mama TT shouldn't be ashamed to admit that she screamed. A lot. Fortunately it only took 5-6 pushes to get her out.

Baby Thomas was born at 9:35p - a healthy baby girl weighing in at 6lbs 12oz, almost a full pound heavier than her sis, and 2 pounds more than her bro... A beautiful feat for both mom and daughter.

Day of labor

Wanted to insert a quick post about the day of labor leading up to Trip's arrival. On Friday, the doctors wanted to induce but we decided to give her the weekend. What a difference 24 hours makes!

The contractions started Friday night. Overnight I woke up almost every hour with the contractions. Saturday morning they were 30 minutes apart. I downloaded a nifty iPhone app to track the contractions and we went about our day running errands - Petsmart for dog food, Costco, etc. By lunchtime at Costco the contractions were 15-20 minutes apart so we decided to head home.

Saturday afternoon the kids took a nap and Papa TT and I decided to run to the grocery store to stock up on food. G-Ma and G-Pa T were around and offered to go, but I wanted to do something productive while I still could. So off we went. I'll never forget standing in front of the beer with Papa TT. A contraction hit and I told him 'Oh. Ow. OK, let's get out of here.' And with his sense of humor, he decides to be funny - 'Hmm, what kind of beer do I want? Let me think.....'

By the time we got home it was late afternoon and the contractions were 10 minutes apart. The doctor told us to make our way to the hospital - no rush but to head in. The rest of the story is above as told by Papa TT.....

Tilly's Arrival and Journey Home

Papa TT has already posted a lot of great pics, but I'm going to back up a little in time and start with Tilly's birth. We've got lots of great pics and videos to post!

Below are the series of events that led us to meeting our little girl:
Monday, 4/26/10
  • 9 am - At our weekly doctors appointment, we discover the fluid level is very low (6.6), so the doctor sends us to the hospital
  • 11 am - Admitted to the hospital
  • 1 pm - Induction begins
  • 5 pm - The contractions are not that bad (Papa TT and I spend the afternoon watching TV), so Papa TT gets Tigger from day care and brings him by for a quick visit. Tigger then goes home with G-Ma T.
  • 10 pm - Pitocin starts and the contractions get worse
Tuesday, 4/27/10
  • 2 am - the contractions are really bad so I get an epidural. Relief comes soon and Papa TT and I sleep for a few hours
  • 8 am - the doctor declares me ready to push
  • 9:36 am - Tilly arrives!

We get in some Papa and Mama TT bonding time with Tilly.

After bonding time, Tilly goes to the nursery for a nap and a few tests.

The next day it's time to go home! We get Tilly's going home outfit (the same one Tigger wore when he came home from the hospital)....

...and discover she does not like having her clothes changed!

After a quick car ride, we arrive home. Pastor Donna arrives at the same time and lends a hand as camerawoman:

And she's home, snug in her crib. She looks just like Tigger did when he came home!

And here's our new family:

We're Home!!!

And tired. He is sleeping in his crib - oh so tiny in oh so big a space...
Room to grow, I suppose...

He Passed!!!

Caleb passed his hearing test this morning... Yeah! Mama Tigger and I were never worried. Ok, we were worried.

Next up - the car seat challenge. We should have him home in a few hours...

More Pics

I am slowly making my way through the photos. Here is tonight's installment, before we are off to another feeding.

One of my favs so far. Notice the hands - the reason we weren't able to get good sono pics, as he often chose this pose in utero:Me & Caleb, getting to know each other:
Mom & Caleb, doing the same:
G-Pa T meeting Caleb for the first time:
Ditto for G-Ma T:
And an extreme close-up:
More to come...

Pee #1

So, Mama Tigger changed her first diaper. And this was the result:

She apparently didn't have the diaper on tight enough, and Caleb peed on her. The first of many such episodes, I am sure...

Update: Out In the Open!

It still looks like Tigger is coming home tomorrow - yeah! He is now in the bassinet - ain't he cute!

The note was from our nurse, reminding us to change him before we feed him. The whole "parenting lite" thing we have been operating under is going by the wayside. We now have to change diapers! I suppose it had to come sometime...

One small note - he had his hearing test today as well. He passed in the left, but not yet in the right. Hopefully he does not take after his old man :). He is going to be re-checked again in the am, before we leave. They said it most likely is due to fluid remaining in the ear canal. We shall see...

Emerging Parents

These are both kinda cute. First, Mom and Tigger:

And now one of me, "waking" Tigger. As we were getting going with the whole feeding thing, Tigger kept falling asleep. The process we worked out was that I would wake him by any means necessary, before handing him off to Mama Tigger. I REALLY enjoyed the tort..., er, um, waking process...

More Videos

Now that we are home, I am able to post the rest of the videos!

Another from pre-op:

Post-op:

Hmmm, not sure why my close-up commentary shots are the title image for the video. Scary. Gotta work on that.

Mama's Home!

We are home from the hospital, without Caleb unfortunately. He has to stay in another couple of days. Even though he continues to progress well, the doc this morning said that the worst thing for us / him would be for a problem to arise and us to have to go through the emergency room. He should be out of the incubator sometime overnight. Once he is in a bassinet for 24 hours, he's ours!

IVs

The IV is out!!! We showed up to the last feeding to discover the night nurse (Ro) had removed Caleb's IV! That made me and Mama Tigger VERY happy. We had a rough time last night when we noticed the IV had moved from both hands to, by then, both feet. Ro didn't think another trip around the appendage river was warranted, given how much Caleb is eating. We agreed!

Now, if we can just get rid of that bilirubin...

Video

We have video! We are gonna start from the beginning.

And here's another, from the hospital:

Unfortunately, I have to get back to the hospital (the food isn't cutting it for Mama Tigger anymore, so I need to grab dinner...). For a taste of what's to come...

Quote

"Holy cow!"

-Papa Tigger seeing what Mama Tigger pumped (60 cc - almost 3x her last pump)

A few seconds later:

"Oh, pardon the pun..."

Update

Caleb continues to improve! He just ate 20 cc, mostly from Mom. His bilirubin is a little high, so he is now under an LED lamp. We will check again this evening. Given how much he is eating, we are optimistic he won't have to be under too long. Also, they cut his IV in half. That should come out soon too...

Fun times...

We Have a Name!!!

Introducing Caleb Jay Thomas!

Mama Tigger and I wanted a name from the Bible. Caleb means faithful, bold and brave in Arabic. He was sent to explore the land of Canaan by Moses (Book of Numbers).

Getting to Jay was a winding path (hence the 2 day delay). We both wanted to include a reference to one of our families.

We were working with Gerald - Geraldine was my grandmother on my mom's side. Neither of us wanted G as the middle initial, so I thought we could work with Jerold. I said out loud Caleb J. Thomas. Mama Tigger heard Caleb Jay Thomas, and the name was born...

Pics!!!

I came home for a quick shower, so I thought I'd upload a few pics...

Dad snuck in to see him about a half hour after birth:

More to come later...

9 1/2 Hours

Momma Tigger and I just woke up after a 9 1/2 hour snooze.. One of the joys (?) of a "younger" baby - he has to remain in the nursery. So, we focused on Momma Tigger's recovery as they looked after Tigger...

We are enjoying it while we can.

P.S. We will have a proper name for Baby Tigger today. Stay Tuned!
